Well, Dan, I can't speak for the rest of those ham receivers, but my SX-42
is sure hard to beat for broadcast reception. Actually, I'm much more
"into" old broadcast receivers than ham receivers. I've been working for
the last four or five days on an old Philco 11-tube Model 37-670 from 1936.
A deteriorated wire-wound resistor, which had shorted to ground, fooled me
for quite a while. I was looking for a bad capacitor instead! Deep inside
the band-switch area (Yes, this was just about as bad as the SX-42!)
I found that both leads of the 4.7 to 7.4 MH coil had been broken. With
that repaired, I am finding the reception, both broadcast and short-wave to
be truly phenomenal! Sure don't understand why we ever let that sort of
quality get away from us, unless, maybe, it would be the price that that
sort of radio would cost to build today! This set has an RF stage and just
2 I.F.'s, but it's built with quality which seemed to disappear from the
Philco line within a couple years.
Of course, Philco didn't get it perfect. Believe it or not, and I'm
convinced it's actually factory original, but this five band radio is
complete with a misfit 4-band dial! I wondered, when it first came to
light, why the short wave stations weren't where they belonged! And there's
no way the "alignment" would ever solve the problem. Hopefully, I've found
a source that will be able to turn me out a new and proper dial in a couple
months. I'd guess that the dial went on at the factory AFTER the alignment
process. I'll bet the original owners never knew they had a problem!
I love the Hallicrafters I've had over the years, but it's easier to find
old Philcos!
