You need to use a piece of ni-chrome wire and a way to vary the amount of
current you run through it to cut the glass from the tube in the 60's they
sold kits to cut off bottles, maybe you can find one. I just soldered a
crystal socket for a HC-6 crystal to a octal base and used a 100kc crystal
in it-works fine.

Hello Skip,

Perhaps it might be easier to use an octal base electrolytic cap.

remove old set screws try using an easy out bolt extractor they come in
different sizes
and have left hand thread to remove the screw
you might also try a left handed drill bit and drill it out

all of these are available at mc master carr

Only thing I can think of would be an Act of God.

Hi Waldo,

It may be a lot easier than most think.

IF you have some old (as in no longer good) Octal base tubes put on a pair
of strong leather gloves (for the just-in-case) and then grip the envelope
in one hand and the tube base in the other. Gently try to twist the envelope
in the base. You can actually twist quite hard if you don't grip too
tightly.

If that doesn't work, just put them in hot, soapy water and keep the bases
submerged as they cool. Then try to twist out the envelopes. You might
have to go back to hot water, but it's been my experience that many will
come out with very little effort even without the hot water treatment. Of
course a lot of them will not budge barring an act of God, dynamite, or a
hammer.

OTOH I've had them come loose just trying to remove what had been a good
tube from the socket.
