Olaf,

Absolutely normal. This is one reason for the AVC in the first place  The 
main reason is to keep the loudspeaker or earphone volume more or less 
constant with varying signal levels.

You have not missed anything.. this is normal behavior.  The AVC system is 
there to keep the signal levels in the radio below the distortion point and 
keep your speaker volume more or less controlled.

I have an antique Philco console radio, made in the 1930's I think. It is a 
TRF set and has no AVC.  You can tune from a weak station which is softly 
listenable to a local station and blast your ears out.
