Bill,

When in FM mode, you are using the FM detector, nor the AM one. So the Hum 
ls likely coming from the detector.  Pull the FM detector tube to see if it 
goes away.  Investigate also the local oscillator B+ line for hum there. If 
the LO is being FM'ed by B+ hum, it will show up (when receiving a signal) 
in the FM mode but not as much in AM mode.

I'll be interested to hear how you solve this one. I have a similar SX-42 
here waiting restoration.
