[Hallicrafters] Transformer Failure SX-16

I recapped  my Hallicrafters Sx-16  & the set and it was operating
super. l used it for an OT Contest and somehow left it in the on
position.  It ran about a week before I was aware of condition. The
set is now dead. The fuse I had installed did not blow but the wax has
started to leak from all of the input locations. I get no resistance
readings from transformer  connections. Can I assume the extended heat
caused the failure , or is it likely a resister also went bad ?  I
thought a fuse would protect this type of failure ?  I am leery of
replacing the transformer and having it fail again.
Any opinions wil be  greatly appreciated.
