I am one of those fellows who actually uses them. I have (2) R-47s and
I use one mobile with
an ICOM 706mkiig. It sound great and much better than any of the cheap
3" stuff out there now.
I also get a kick out of using a state of the art rig with a vintage
speaker. Oh, and I have
the one with the "h" cast in the metal.

It's the R-47.
As to why it's so expensive on the used market, who knows? Some fellows
like to actually use them, as they were supposed to be optimized for SSB
voice work. Some collectors get all hetted up over the fact that there
are at least four slightly different versions -- two with the original
art deco-style "h" logo (one cast into the metal, the other painted on),
one with the newer slanted/italic-style "h" logo, and a fourth that is
"upside-down" for mobile mounting beneath a dashboard.
One thing I've wondered: I've seen very similar speakers bearing the
Motorola logo. I wonder if Motorola made the speakers for Hallicrafters,
or Hallicrafters for Motorola, or if they are entirely different units
that just happen to look alike.
