Hello all-
  This is to thank you for all the responses to my
request for assistance with my SX-17.
  The problem proved to be an open resistor, as
suggested by Bill K2WH. 
  The radio came to life after replacement of the
resistor and some internal cleaning and new power
condensers. The BFO isn't working yet, but will
address this in the next few days.
