My two and a half cents worth follows.

I have the Hammarlunds (110-145-170-180, A and non-A mix) and whole lot
of Hallicrafters.

In a nutshell - The HQ180A will likely be less drifty than the SX-100.
The Hammarlund stock audio will sound "restricted" in comparison, as the
HQ-series has a rather unique feedback circuit that restricts the audio
bandpass as a function of audio gain position. The SX-100 is better
sounding for general SWL listening.

The HQ180A will be more mechanically stable than the SX-100. This is my
only real complaint with the SX-100 - tuning SSB on 10 meters with the
Hallicrafters, I need to watch for the cats jumping up onto the
operating bench and shifting me off frequency.

The SX-100 is more fun to use, the tuning is smoother. The HQ-180A has
a gazillion knobs and better overall selectivity options than the
Hallicrafters. The HQ-180A AGC is smoother on CW and SSB.

Some folks report the HQ series bandswitches tend to become
intermittant, I have not had this symptom in my 170's or 180.

Side note, my opinion only, the current prices of SX-100's on auction
sites is really, really inflated considering the large number of them
available and their general performance. I don't even want to talk
about the SX-115, I'm going to get nailed when its time to renew my
Boatanchor rider to the homeowners policy if they figure premiums by
current market value.

Have one of each on your operating desk, or at least try both before
deciding on keeping one. Both receivers have their merits.
