I have made a long analisis of making knobs, in the form of
an email, and did something and loss it. Will try again. All
Hallicrafters knobs ara made with a brass insert. In a small
machine shop, making 200 or 300 hundred insert could cost
about 20 or 30 cents each. This could be used for making any
knob. Lets take as a case the tunning knob of the SX-28 or
SX-28A. To make the knob by injection, a steel mold is
necessary and could cost between $1,500.00 and $2,000.00.
When making 300 he cost per knob is about $7.00 each in mold
cost .The injection cost is extremely low and it mskes no
difference if it is 300 or a 1,000, The knob, after made
will have to go to the machine shop to make the hole and tap
for the set screw.
I have been told that in place of the steel mold, one made
of plaster could be made that could be useful for 30 or 40
units. I do not know!
Those that live in large industrial locations, could look
into plastic injection companies and get some information.
I am sure that we have suffient talent in the net that this
problen of reproducing knobs at low cost, can be solved.
The large knobs for the SX-28 or SX-28A has been sold, in
E, for up to $25.00
each. I need 3 with open or close spokes, but will not pay
that amount.
Any comments? Here are some ideas!
