I had one like that when it was only a few months old.
Actually I had the HT-44 and SX-117 combo.

Both had bad disk ceramics. In the transmitter it was the driver stage
including the coupling cap to the finals.

I just don't remember where they were in the 117 but I do remember recapping
two tubes in it as far as the disk ceramics go.  All I took out had a
resistance that could be measured on a standard Simpson VOM.

OTOH, I'd check the tubes, but as you've indicated, it could be something
simple.
