A common problem on all tube type receivers (and
transmitters as well) are bad grounds caused by loose
or corroded hardware. It takes a few minutes, but you
need to slightly loosen and then retighten every
screw, nut, bolt, etc., on the unit. This includes
the screws that hold the tube sockets in place, the
nuts that hold the bolts attached to the shields, the
machine screws that hold the terminal strips in place,
what holds the variable capacitors in place,
everything!
In most sets virtually all, if not all, of the grounds
are made through these fasteners to the chassis. Over
the years they work loose, corrode, and generally
cause bad grounds. Just by loosening and then
retightening all of the hardware you undo decades of
corrosion, dirt, etc. I have found that numerous
operating problems just disappear when time is taken
to redo all of the hardware. All that is usually
required is to loosen the hardware about 10 degrees
and then tighten it up again. Works wonders, doesn't
cost anything, and doesn't really take that long to
accomplish.

I would now ck for bad solder joints and and any
ungrounded shielded wires. Then check voltages and /or
resistances on the tube sockets as per a manual or
photofact to narrow it down.
