I am working with a reproduction guy to see if it is feasible to manufacture
a reproduction knob. I have sent him JPEG files from all angles of the knob
without the skirt and weight. He is of the opinion he can mold a black
plastic replica with drilled/tapped holes for the set screws and skirt
attachment screws. In other words, it will be solid plastic and NOT molded
around a brass insert. If this goes far enough, I will be sending him my
ONLY good knob to make the mold (makes me pretty nervous).
I know there are purists who want either a bona fide original or an
undetectable reproduction. If this works, it will only be detectable if you
take the knob off the rig and the skirt/weight off the knob. If that's not
good enough for you, read no further.
I need 2 of these knobs (3 if the original is destroyed while making the
mold). I also have to find someone to make the shiny front decorative insert
(is it plastic or metal? Any leads on someone who might be able to make
those?) I need feedback from those of you who need one of these knobs (or
know of others that do) to see if the set-up costs can be recovered at a
reasonable unit price. What's reasonable? I guess it depends on your
desperation level. I have been trolling for a replacement for over a year
without as much as a nibble.
Like I said, I need your feedback and opinions. I will either take the next
step or abandon this idea as "unworkable". In either case, I will keep you
posted.
