Thanks to all who have answered....it seems that I have indeed commited the
sin of low impedance stereo headphones (Sony).  I have located JRC 600 ohm
mono headphones at Universal Radio but am going to try
an impedance transformer before I buy them.  The hum in the speaker is
negligible. Again, thank you to all who replied....very helpful info.
