Subject: PAPER CAPACITORS

Sprague, a very large capacitor company put out a line of black Bakelite
oil impregnated capacitors. The paper and oil used in some are
hygroscopic, tend to absorb moisture.
those were called, in their ads "BLACK BEAUTIE" We run across these
quite often and some are called BBOD or black beauties of death.
To further identify the bad lots you will see some with color stripes
identified the voltage, capacitance and tolerance. These are also called
bumblebees and are all BAD. the leakage resistance is very low or
shorted.
The next have the data printed in yellow, these are bad also.
The third type is printed in red, I have not seen this series with a bad
one.
There are some brown cased caps that seem to exhibit high leakage
again these are in the tubular format not the brown dipped mylars
I think that the tiny chief relates to the red cased ones we so often see
in Halli
gear, about 90% of these fail the Heath capacitor test.

Duane, sorry to be so long winded.
old jack tomorrow 1-22-04 i will see 79!
