[Hallicrafters] SR-400A troubles

I have a question for you seasoned Hallicrafters folks.

I took delivery of a beautiful SR-400A yesterday.
It looks like it is a year old.

Like normal, I have found some problems with the rig.
The output was very low, which I fixed with a different set of finals.
Balanced, Neutralized, and aligned the driver/mixer/antenna slugs.

The other remaining problem is that the receive audio on 80 meters is 
distorted like the sound of aurora on the band. Strong aurora, like 
what the audio sounds like on 6 meters during an aurora opening. The 
other bands sound fine, at least 40 and 20 do where I was able to hear 
signals.

Any clues?
