An update on this. I actually own three SX-62s, though one will shortly
be going to a friend who had one many years ago and has done tons of
things for me over the years. The one of which I spoke this afternoon is
my favorite among the two, though that doesn't necessarily mean that it
is in best shape. I probably am looking to get it restored. I have an
SX-71 that had been restored before i purchased it and I am quite fond
of it. Anyway the SX-62 of which I speak came with came with an 42
Speaker and after rapidly flipping the switch on the speaker a couple of
times between the communication and high fidelity positions the hum
suddenly vanished. Good but not that good, still no reception in FM and
I also noticed that sensitivity on band 4 dropped off. I am thinking
that maybe I have some dirty contacts. Interestingly the other SX-62 had
some issues with sensitivity on bands that was cured by spraying some
Radio Shack contact clean on the band selector switch. Of interest is
these two SX-62s are clearly different version. The first one has a
black face plate while the one I was working with today has a silver
colored aluminum face plate. Also the the first one has access opening
from the top to get at the band switch. The one I was working today does
not so I'll have to get at it from the bottom. When I do I'll blow all
the dust and use the contact cleaner on all the switches. The Sx-62 with
the black face plate also has a two prong receptacle for a plug on the
R-46 Speaker that plugs in. The one with the aluminum silver colored
face plate has standard post contacts for the speaker. It also has a few
less contact on the antenna connection. Well that's the latest on my
SX-62 Oh the other SX-62 (Black Face Plate) has some slop in the tuning
capacitor that makes it difficult to stay on a station, it (the tuning
capacitor moves slightly after I stop turning it) I think I'll go over
tube placement agasin to see if I have everthing right on that front.
Someone off list said I should mention where I live in case I end up
shipping this baby out. I live in Western Washington State. Thanks for
listening and I appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.
