It is important to closely examine set screws on all Hallicrafters knobs
before attempting to remove them. Usually Hallicrafters have "Bristol" type
splined set screws in the knobs but occasionally you will find some "Allen" types
mixed in. For those who are unaware about Bristols there is an Allen wrench that
will go in but it will damage the splined type drive if you exert any force.
I have encountered Bristol set screws that were damaged internally by previous
owners to the point where the proper Bristol tool will no longer fit. When
this is the case I use a Bristol wrench that has been ground flat on the end so
that the edges are sharp. Usually this can be tapped and wiggled in until it
somewhat restores the spline shape enough that the screw can be removed. New
Bristol screws are available from McMaster-Carr.
