A story is told of an Australian amateur radio
operator who bought a new Hallicrafters S-20R just
before the attack on Pearl Harbor (and when the
British Empire was brought into the war with Japan).
The Australian military asked for every "modern"
receiver to be turned over to them (although they did
pay for them).

This particular amateur went through basic training,
then radio school, and was assigned to a station.
There was an S-20R. Sure enough, it was his old one.
Then, a couple of years later, after several
assignments, he was again assigned to another station.
Yep, his old S-20R was there. Finally, a couple of
years after the war was over, the amateur was looking
around a "war surplus" outlet in Sydney. Of course
there were several S-20R receivers.

He looked at several, then looked at another. You
guessed it! It was his old S-20R. He bought the
receiver and took it back home, where it had started
from originally!

There were a number of stories of hams doing this and
then enlisting in the Signal Corps, only to find
themselves sitting in front of their own loaned equipment.
