[Hallicrafters] BFO - BFD?

As usual, Glen's done a great job of describing how to do it here.

I would add, for clarification, is that I find I have the best results when
I center the BFO control to mid-range, and peak the as-of-yet undetectable
signal with either the main or bandspread tuning. I then waggle the BFO
control to one sideband or the other. This assumes, of course, that the
BFO alignment is such that mid-travel on the BFO knob actually has
something to do with its range, which is not necessarily the case! Once
you get the feel of a particular receiver, you can tell where the BFO
offset will be.

Although I have read in other places that the correct procedure is to turn
the audio gain all the way up, I usually end up turning it up between half
and full. The hum on some receivers tends to get noticable toward the
upper end of the gain range..... Doesn't happen on all mine, but on
some.... even with replaced caps.

Using this technique, I have found that my HRO-7 is a quite passable SSB
rig, especially by manipulating the selectivity and phasing controls. This
is a fine discussion, as I think it will help some folks learn how to get a
lot more performance out of their radios....
