Here are my conclusions about the possibility of the
SX-15 having the magic-eye tuner... Taking into
account W4AWM's comments last month compared with my
own SX-15, reviewing Chuck's book & LA5KI's
Hallicrafter site (which shows internal pictures of
the models that DID come with magic-eye tuners), I'm
about 98% positive that they did not come from the
factory that way.
Eventhough the modification on my set looks OEM and
the mod is as old as the set is, there are two things
that bother me about it.
1. Why would Hallicrafters drill two holes in the face
to mount the plate that holds the eye tube? I know
they did it with the SX(S)-14's, but the tube was
higher and not as close to the deck as the SX(S)-10
and others which were mounted off of the deck.
2. Hallicrafters might have produced the SX(S)-15 as
more affordable model for cost aware comsumers that
didn't really need, want or could afford the cost of a
unit with an eye tube - they already had basically 4
models with an eye tube on the market if somebody
absolutely had to have this feature. Magic-eye tubes
were the rage then and it would not be unlikely for
somebody to produce an aftermarket kit for an upgrade
of sorts.
Hallicrafters released the SX(S)-10,11,12 & 14 in
1936, all had the eye tubes. What did they need
another one for?
The real issue is, does it work like it's supposed to
and is it proper and representative of others models
like it. I'd have to say it is... it looks neat too.
