A fellow gave me an SX-100 (story at www.kiyoinc.com/heathstuff3.html)
I've been tuning around with it and have written a couple status
reports for the giver. I owe him the reassurance that I was treating
the radio well.
I noticed that the bandspread knob was missing the inner "bright". I
mentioned that in one of my status reports and he offered to "turn" one
on his lathe if I would return the knobs to him.
I got a set of spline wrenches from McMaster and discovered that the
spline wrench will not go into one of the two setscrews. I was able to
remove the setscrew using a standard hex allen wrench.
Upon closer inspection, it is definitely a spline setscrew but probably
banged up. I haven't looked at it using magnification.
Anyone know how to "touch up" a spline set screw? Is this a job for a
teeny-tiny grinder, a disection microscope? I have a Dremel tool and a
American Optical stereo microscope but haven't worked on anything this
small.
This SX-100 has non calibrated Notch Frequency and Depth knobs. I did
a websearch and saw serveral folk looking for these knobs for SX-100s'.
The knobs on my SX-100 are very Hallicrafters looking. Black, narrow
finger groves, brights.
It's odd that several SX-100's would turn up with non-standard knobs.
Especially as Hallicrafters used spline setscrews.
I'm guessing that Hallicrafters did a run of SX-100's with generic
Notch knobs. If so, I'd guess that these are rare collectables.
