Many cores were held in place with wax (beeswax?) or a variant of fingernail
polish.
As pointed out, a hair dryer (not a heat gun) will usually loosen the slug.
Replacement slugs are available from Surplus Sales........

I have decided to re-do the alignment on my SX-111 due to various problems
with receiving.
The alignment includes adjustments to various coils in the front end prior
to the 1st RF amp. Some of these are way out of resonance and need to be
adjusted. For instance, the 10 meter band is resonant at 25mhz. The 15
meter band is resonant at 19mhz etc. I am trying to get a match to the
first RF stage to improve the sensitivity. And yes this mismatch is there
even when adjusting the trimmer cap on the front panel 360 degrees.
I have tried to adjust these coils front end coils, but the cores will not
turn. Apparently they are either glued or cemented in place (I think). I
would like to free these up so I can adjust them. Does anyone know how to
free up the cores in these front end coils? Would a drop of solvent or
WD-40 damage the form? Were these cores cemented in place at the factory?
Any ideas would be helpful.
