Greg's idea is brilliant and points to the reason the Hammarlund SP-600
is my favorite receiver, even though my nostalgic choice would be a
Hallicrafters SX-42. It has nothing to do with performance. The
Hammarlund and its variants are the only vintage sets that pay for
themselves.
An example that has not been recapped -- and thus is inoperative -- can
be bought for $250. Removing its 54 Black Beauties and replacing them
with .01uf 500V ceramic discs, as Hammarlund did, will cost $17.28 at
current Mouser Electronics prices. Meanwhile, the going rate for Black
Beauties among insane audiophiles is $5.00 apiece according to a couple
of online dealers and numerous eBay sellers. Thus, the resale value of
the caps totals $270 less $17.20 for their replacements -- a net of
$252.80 -- a slight profit over the acquisition price.
Better yet, you can easily re-sell your recapped SP-600 for $750 (or
more) and make a profit of at least $500 a crack.
Thanks, Greg.
