[Hallicrafters] S-120 Front Panel Corrosion?

Joe et al,
Besides the brand new one I bought in 1963, I've had maybe three S-120
receivers in recent years. All of them (except the new one in '63) had
flaws similar to what you describe. While I never removed the panels, I
suspect it may have been something in what they coated them with, that
or oxidation. I've seen something similar on Eico Test Equipment having
brushed aluminum faces.
