I have found that a simple tuner on the antenna input to most of these old
receivers
really peps most of them up.

A tv balun was a great help to my SX28A. My antenna system is 50 ohm
throughout and my receiver was very deaf on all bands until I put that balun
in. It is an old (and large) tv balun from the 60's and maybe it just
happens to have enough ferrite and winding in it to make it work. It is
very effective on broadcast as well as shortwave.
