"just lay these on the surface of the ground" What about mowing your grass?
Should they not be tacked down or buried?

Butternut sells a radial kit for the HF6V: four pieces of multistranded
insulated (black) cable and a single long counterpoise for 80M. Just lay
these on the surface of the ground and you will be all set. They won't be
very conspicuous, and you will get out a LOT better than with some mini
portable antenna. I've been using an HF6V with an above-ground radial system
for about 15 yrs with excellent results (I did add extra radials for 30M).
