[Hallicrafters] SX-100 dial index marks adjustment

Hi Guys,
First - I searched the past reflector mail for help and came to the 
conclusion that it is very important to have a descriptive subject 
title for searching purposes.
Second - I do have the manual and I think I can read, however Section 
6-6 on Dial Cable Restringing is giving me trouble on setting the main 
tuning dial index marks.
    After much fooling around, I got the Bandspread index set.
    But I am having trouble with the Main dial.  I can't get it to index 
properly and there seems to me a lot of backlash.  It was about 1/16 
off on both dials when I started and I should have left well enough 
alone.
    Is there a trick to doing this?
