Hi Joe,

I have never replaced my audio pot, but from what you say, it appears the 
control has been replaced with a stereo pan pot. You neglected to say where they 
took off the resistor to the tone control from on that wierd pot. My feeling, 
and I am no expert, is that if you replace the pot with a regular 1 meg 
control, you should take the tone control tap  off at the hot end of the new audio 
pot. If you take it off at the wiper, the tone will vary some with the position 
of the volume control. 

 Just my two cents, I am sure some of the more technical types on here will 
wade in with a more plausible method.
