On June 21st I sent out a note telling of my pending SX-16 project, and after
a busy summer, I'm ready. Old Jack sent a cautionary reminder about the pwr
and the audio output transformers, and guess what... The audio out
transformer has already been replaced in this rig with a Stancor A-3890 universal audio
output. (P-P primary is from 4K to 14K ohm, 50ma, 15 watts, and the secondary
is 1 to 30 ohm.) So, it looks like someone already tried to run it without a
load...ha.

I haven't been able to find the secondary color code, but I think I have the
correct combination of output wires to make it work. The previous user may
have been one wire off to get an approximate 8 ohm output, but I can't be sure.

I've added a fuse in the AC transformer primary, and may add one to the
center tap lead of the secondary where the standby/receive switch is.

I've checked the power and IF transformers for continuity, but since the
radio has had some questionable work done on it in the past, I will be taking a
closer look at the circuitry while I wait for new caps to arrive. T5 seems to
be OK, also.

C-30, cathode bypass for the 1st 6K7 IF, had 2 ea .25 mf caps in parallel
rather than just one .25 as shown in the schematic. Both caps are exactly the
same and look like factory. Any idea there?

The S-meter has a strap around it, because of the common problem with the
case splitting.

I'm still interested in hearing details of your SX-16 or 17 project.

Thanks,
Joe
