Hello to all-
After getting the SX 17 receiving and discovering
the BFO wasn't coming up, I replaced all the caps with
the modern article, inserted and securely waxed into
the old paper condenser tubes. After aligning the IF.
It played strong but still had no BFO. Looking at the
SX 16 schematics, it became apparent that I'd missed
two .01 mfd condensers, C32 and C33.
The SX 16 Alignment Procedure booklet has a clear
picture of the chassis underneath with the condensers
and resistors tagged by number, except C32 and C33.
Looking at the BFO transformer and 6J7 tube, I
noticed that the transformer and tube socket sit on a
deck bolted to the main chassis.
Well, thats where the two missing condensers are
located.
After unbolting the deck from the chassis I drilled
out the rivets holding the tube socket to the deck. I
used a hand drill and kept the chips out of the
chassis, and because I couldn't get room to use a
wrench or pliers on the transformer can hold-down
nuts, I also drilled out the rivets holding the can
retaining bolts to the can.
Removing the transformer can lets the deck be
carefully moved to one side enough to access the two
condensers and to check total of three resistors and
one mica cap. The space underneath the deck was
covered with wax from the condensers.
I soldered the new .01's in place. I have to admit
I didn't put the new condensers into the old tubes in
this instance, things are a little tight in there.
After cleaning things up , I soldered 6-32 nuts to
the can retaining bolts ( these are completely blind,
theres no way to hold the nuts).
The BFO transformer can is now securely bolted to
the deck and the tube socket is also now bolted down.
All the bolts have star lockwashers, should be good
for a long time.
The best part is the BFO now performs as it should.
The set still needs alignment completed and some
other minor things, cabinet cleaned up, etc.
You have to love the PP 6V6's.
Thanks for the help and advice.
