[Hallicrafters] R-8T & R-12T Speaker.

I am currently rebuilding an R-8T accessory speaker to match my SX-17.
One of the things
wrong with it is the wooden front grill with the letter "H" in the
center. This grill was/is
de-laminating. Taking the grill off the speaker case and setting the
wooden grill on the
work bench revealed the grill is made of (3) distinct sections
sandwiched together.

A heavy section or bottom section about 3/16" thick, an intermediate
section about 1/16"
thick and then the final section about 1/16" thick. The final section
is the one facing outward
and the one everyone sees. This whole thing is placed onto the metal
cabinet and secured
with 4 small wood screws with the speaker grill cloth between both.

I separated these (3) sections using a very sharp paint scraper. This
worked real well and
was able to inspect each individual part of this wooden sandwich.

My 1st question, and I don't know if anyone can answer this, why would
Hallicrafters designers
go through all the trouble of making the front grill and logo out of (3)
individual layers (2) of
them almost paper thin? Why not just make it out of (1) solid piece of
wood. Seems to me
to be much simpler.

My 2nd question, looking at the Hallicrafters book a picture of an R-12T
speaker is shown with
what appears to be white grill cloth. Does anyone know for sure what
the color of the original
cloth used in these speakers was. The grill cloth in this speaker is so
faded and damaged, I
cannot tell what it may have been.

Oh, believe it or not, the speaker and cone is in very good shape.

Thanks for replies.
