I recently acquired a nice SW-500 (same as the S-120 except for
colour of front panel) which after replacing the electrolytic caps
in the power supply and a alignment worked well except that
it still had a lot of hum.
Shorting the grid of the 12AV6 to the B- line caused the hum to
go away but doing the same with the detector output had no effect.
At this point I realized that one side of the AC line was connected
directly to the low side of the volume control. Moved it to the point
which the common regative the the filter caps connect solved the
problem! Watch out for those ground loops!
As I write this I am using it to listen to Radio New Zealand, which
sounds like a local BC station here in Calgary AB. I agree with Chuck
Dachis that
the perforance of these simple receivers can be amazing (below
16 Mc, anyhow:))
