heck John, this is too easy to answer :-)
1 - i use my HQ-180 for trans-pacific MW DX, and i need to be able to
discern the frequency of a station down to at least 1kHz, coz non-American
stations use a 9kHz grid while the Americas use a 10kHz grid. Why the
HQ-180?? coz its selection of IF bandwidths works better on MW than my
ricebox R-71.
2 - i use my SP-600 as a living room SW receiver (yes it looks good) - i
keep a copy of Passport to World-band radio on top, and i can easily tell
exactly what i am listening too, no mistakes.
3 - i plan to use my SX-71 as a second in-house radio for similar reasons
(no it does NOT look good - yet). Hard to pin-point what you are listening
to with only an analog dial.
NOTE the following. In every case, installation of an AADE unit is entirely
reversible. The unit sits in its own box on top of the receiver. The
connections inside the radio can be removed in about one minute with a
soldering iron and screwdriver. No i dont drill extra holes, they arent
necessary.
Even if i were using boatanchor equipment for 80M ragchew i would still want
the DFD - time and again i hear nets with some guys on AM, some on SSB, and
*noone* on exactly the same frequency :-) Not that they seem to care.

Lots of interesting conversation regarding digital readouts and the like.
While the AADE unit looks like a nice piece, I'd have to question why one
would want to tear into vintage gear and paste a digital dial in there?
