Assuming he's got the right DC and heater voltages on the tubes... If his
AGC line is right and his first mixer and BFO injection levels are right,
then he needs to look at signal levels (stage gains). I suggest a back to
front approach with a signal generator as it's easier than front to back
with a RF/audio voltmeter. This way he can find the stadium which is in
error. I suspect by stadiums he means stages.
There is nothing magical about the SX-117 other than the nice design with
tracking first IF filter and the beautiful audio from LC filters as oposed
to mechanical.
He's probably got a bad tube (the only true test of a tube is how it
behaves in the circuit) or more likely low gain in one or more stadiums
owing to bad bypass cap or shorted IF resonance cap. This should be
noticable in tuning that stadium as the effexts would have been less than
for the other stadiums.
