[Hallicrafters] If You Own D-104, Please Read

I have already used the HC-5 in a dead D104. Works good.

The D104 accepts the Heil HC-5 element w/o mechanical problem. You will
need some medium-soft foam to cut & place around the HC-5 to hold it in
place. The blob of cotton behind the black grill cloth should be removed so
it doesn't muffle the HC-5. The black cloth can be tacked in place using
some cloth glue around the edges (check the XYL's sewing basket, if needed).

The HC-5 is low impedance. Abt 2000 ohm @ 1KHz according to the Heil site.
Hence, you need the low to hi Z miniature transformer that Heil sells.

FYI: The HC-5 is lower output than the D104 so you can close talk and not
over drive the mic input amp and/or not pick up back ground noises like the
amp fan.

Most everyone likes the sound of the HC-5 over an old D104 with an original
(now questionable) crystal element.

If you want to protect the chrome on the UG8 stand use some clear shrink
tubing to cover the upright mast from top to bottom. Trim a hole for the
PTT "hook" at the top using a hobby knife.

Loss of the old xtal element is not the end of the venerable chrome
lollipop. Nothing says "ham radio" like the ol' lollipop.

PS
While you're at it, replace the old cord with a new coil cord. Try to get a
nine footer.
