Since you were hooking up the speaker, it may have been audio that got
you not line voltage. The high impedance speaker terminals can develop
quite a voltage if the volume control is turned up. I have been bit by
500 ohm speaker terminals. The 5000 ohm would be even worse.
To install a 3-wire grounded line cord on a transformer powered radio.
connect the hot (black) wire to the switch, the neutral (white) wire to
the transformer return and the ground (green) wire to the chassis.
For transformerless (AC/DC) radios connect the hot wire to the switch,
the neutral to the chassis and the ground to the cabinet which must be
insulated from the chassis. In some cases minor rewiring may be required
as the switch may go to the chassis.
