Greetings

Hi Mark. I'm just finishing off an SX-28A that I've had for a year and a half now. They do have the ability to intimidate, no doubt about it, but the challenge they present just doubles the gratification once completed. Don't cut any corners on the recap job. Not sure if internet documentation states this, but there are no paper caps in the HF Osc section, just a few micas which should be okay, but do check them if you so desire. You may find that some of the micas in the IF trannies are out of whack. Make sure you document everything, making little tags to put on every wire that you unsolder from the different sections. Be very, very careful when removing the bandswitch shaft, making sure that all of the wafers are properly aligned when replacing the shaft. I found that the front one on my unit was off 180 degrees which rendered the unit inoperative under any set of circumstances. I cleaned my very dirty tuning mechanism by completely removing it from the chassis and washing it in a large pan containg kerosene. Let it soak for a while and then use a tooth brush or something similar to help breaking down the dried out grease. After drying it you can lube the gears with any suitable product. You will find this makes the mechanism work flawlessly. Hope this helps and keep us posted on your progress.

best regards,
