many times we forget that the companies that made our old gear . also
looked for ways to save a few dollars .
one way was using under rated disk and mica caps in the transmitting
sections of these rigs.
the Johnson Valiant is a prime work of this. the 330 mica and 150 mica caps
in the load ckt are parelled caps to get a 1kv rating. these are prone to
fail.. W5SUM has a good write up on this problem. Ronnie tried 2kv 3kv caps
in these ckts and still had trouble. when you are looking at the
transmitter section and it has 1kv caps it is a good ideal to replace them
with no smaller the 3kv dc caps. In the Valiant you will need to go to 5
or 6 kv transmitting caps. for the HT 37 or HT44 i would also go with 5 kv
caps or at least parallel a couple of 3 kv caps to get the value needed.
remember overkill in the transmitter section is a good thing.. even those
bypass caps on the ac line ckt. need to be replaced. one of my valiants got
50 volts to ground . and they have 40 of these in the entire unit. guess
what 2 of them were leaky.
