I can't add much to Ron's excellent explanation, other than to say I
recently bought one of these International Harvester brochures off eBay and
it's really fascinating.  Great photos and description of the expedition and
the important role ham radio played plus a nice shot of an SX-42 in action.

PS:  We know a lot of these radios are still around but I suspect the IH
trucks were left behind.  But one would certainly be the ultimate
hamfest-mobile today!
