[Hallicrafters] Advice sought on antenna cable type

Remember, the only reason we cut antennas to be resonant is so
you don't need a nasty old tuner.  No other reason but that and
a shame more hams don't use tuners.

One need not be interested in resonance, as long as one wants to
use a tuner.  Therefore, just put up the longest antenna possible
and have at it - with a tuner of course and most importantly -
ladder line or open wire feeders (a must). 

Oh BTW, when tubes were used in transmitters, the PLATE and LOAD
controls were your basic tuner.  Manufacturers took that away from
us to make rigs smaller and to sell the PLATE and LOAD controls
in another box as an accessory for a lot more money.

At 40 meters the loss in the feedline is basically nil
(I know, there is always some, the most with RG58/U of
the types mentioned, but for all practical purposes it
can be ignored at 7 MHz).

Now, if he is only interested in 40 meter operation,
then he will be better off using coax since this will
not require an additional piece of equipment (namely
an "antenna tuner") in his shack.  An antenna tuner
requires a "bit" of tuning and adds to the complexity
of the the installation.

If he is interested in adding 20 and 10 (15 meters
will work automatically on a 40 meter dipole), then it
would be cheaper just to add wires for 20 and 10
meters in parallel with the 40 meter arrangement
("parallel" or "fan" dipole).  Those antennas work
fine and are still fed directly with coax which
matches the output impedance of the HT-37, thus,
eliminating the need for an antenna tuner.  Around $5
for the wire if he doesn't have it around!

With the HT-37 you don't have to worry about the WARC
bands or the new 60 meter band.  It doesn't work
there!
