Have you thought of the advantages of using twin-lead or open-wire line
and a tuner? The feedline would be much, much lighter, and would not
drag the feedpoint of the antenna down nearly as much. Less power would
be lost in the feedline, the antenna would work well all across the band,
and it would be useable on other bands as well.

I have used homemade open wire line and have also used ordinary 300-ohm
twin-lead. The cheapest TV line available will easily handle the output
of your HT-37. Just remember to take a look in a Radio Amateur's
Handbook and follow the recommendations there for reinforcing the
feedpoint. Coax is not the only feed-line.
