Hi Joe;
I have worked on a few. In fact, my first receiver was one. Back in the
late 40's. Because it is an AC/DC with one side of the line connected to
the chassis, it can be a killer. I recommend you change the line cord to
a 3-wire with a safety ground. Connect the safety ground (green wire) to
the cabinet, the neutral (white wire) to the chassis and the hot wire
(black) to the on/off switch. It may require a small change in wiring as
some times they go from the switch directly to the chassis. I don't
remember which they used for the EC-1. You want the on/off switch to feed
the filament string and the rectifier plate. That way, the cabinet and
chassis are both at ground potential. When off, the only thing hot is the
black wire to the switch.
The only other thing I can suggest is to replace all the electrolytic
capacitors and see what happens. I use a 60 watt light bulb in series, so
if a short occurs, the light bulb lights up instead of burning something
up. After a while I change to a 100 watt bulb for a while, then a 150
watt bulb. This allows the caps to charge up gradually. When you are
satisfied all is ok. you can eliminate the light. I further recommend you
use it with a voltage reducer as the line voltage now is considerable
higher than when it was made. It will prolong the life. See my article on
the BAMA site, about half way down the home page. Good luck.
