Ed,

If nobody else has commented, here is a hint about semi break-in and the HT
37.   You can rewire the original VOX circuit (it's built in) to work on CW.
If my memory serves, there is an article in CQ from the early 60's that says
how to do it.  I know - I had a 37 and installed the "tattoo" keying mod,
and it worked well.

Perhaps someone out there knows where to find the info or has a copy of the
article.  I think the circuit is similar to that used in the HT 32B.

Otherwise, your comments are correct and very helpful.   I think many modern
hams are confused by the challenges of boatanchor antenna switching - there
are so many approaches to the problem.
