Here's a thought:
  Do the SS rectifier replacement but remove the 5-volt windings from the 
rectifier sockets.  Then use one or both of them on the primary in *buck* 
mode to reduce the higher line voltage by 5 or 10 volts down to where it 
used to be.  The filament windings are rated for 3 amps which is about what 
the primary will pull at full power.
