[Hallicrafters] S-120 Tuning & Band Spread

My S-120 tuning and band spread controls do not turn smoothly and both are
rather stiff, such that my hand becomes tired after a couple of times across
the dial.  Is this normal for this reciever?

Where the dial indicators slide along an aluminum bar it looks like it needs
to be lubricated or at least cleaned, but I am not sure what to use.
