[Hallicrafters] Another dumb question-Capacitor Checkers

What type of capacitor checker ???
There are three types that IO am familiar with.
The in circuit checker
The capacitance measurement checker
And the one that is the most usefull the leakage checker.....
The in circuit checker can tell you if the cap is shorted or open circuit without taking the cap
out of the rig, that is if the surrounding circuit does not affect your reading, this test can be
easily done with multimeter or signal genirator and scope etc. I have one and have not used it
much.
The capacitance measurement checker, can be usefull for selecting components that are "spot on" in
value for 50KHz IF bandpass filters and tuned circuits etc. This can be the Digital multimeter tye
or the tube type (less accurate) I have one of both.
The leakage checker is the most usefull, having determined that the capacitor is indeed the
correct value and is not short or open circuit, the question is "will it leak when 400 volts is
applied" ? The multimeter checker only uses 9 volts or so. Nothing better than knowing that cap.
can withstand 250v in that circuit that only has 100 volts across it without any leakage. This
type of tester is often part of the tube type capacitance bridege meter or R/L/C meter made by
Hallicrafters or Heathkit or Eico. Finding all those leaking caps gets rid of that "crackle" in
the speaker, and adds to your listening pleasure.
They all have their place and some are more usefull than others.
