[Hallicrafters] SX-73 dial lock and stuff

I'm restoring a SX-73/R-274 and have a few minor problems.
The military manual that I have gives no detail
information on the mail tuning drive mechanism. My
receiver main tuning coupler has a pair of right angle
plates on the coupling from the reduction gear set to the
main tuning capacitors. In one direction the coupling is
direct contact (with no give) but in the other direction,
a pair of small springs pull the following plate and there
is substantial error because of spring stretch. I have
relubricated the main tuning caps as per manual
instructions but any drag causes the springs to stretch
and eventually catch up, but not immediately. It seems to
me that a direct connection would be necessary in both
directions to reduce dial readout error.
HELP!
What am I missing?
