[Hallicrafters] SX-28 Front Panel

Does anyone know how Hallicrafters made the ''Leather Grain'' Front Panel for the SX-28 and SX-28A, back in the Fourties ??  They did a fantastic job,most of them are still in good shape and look great  to-day, along with the ''engraved '' Lettering which must have been produced at the same time.--Did they etch it,or what ???--I am curious about the process.

Any of the ''Old,Old Timers'' have an answer ??
