Hi, I am in the process of restoring a Hallicrafters Model S-38 with the
help of this forum which has been much appreciated. I still continue to
have a fairly loud buzz from the speaker when the unit is turned on. The
volume control has no effect on the buzz, it is just as loud at 0 volume as
at full volume. I have replaced all of the capacitors with the exception of
the mica caps, I did not replace those. I am running the unit through an
isolation transformer, but have also tried it without the transformer and
still have the buzz. I have tested the speaker separately with another
source and it works fine. Do you think I need to replace the mica caps,
or could it be a bad tube, or do I need to install a ground wire somewhere?
I am able to receive stations so the radio does work, except for that
confounded buzz!! Any help or suggestions as to where to start, or if you
could direct me to the appropriate archive would be extremely appreciated.
I am sure this issue has been brought up many times so I apologize if I am
bringing up something that has already been discussed and will continue to
try to research the archives.
Thanks again in advance for any help you can provide!

Dave Harms
