[Hallicrafters] SX-42 question

I will be picking up an SX-42 that is in remarkably good physical condition 
but has not had power to it since about 1997. The fellow mentioned something 
about the S-meter being in the B+ line and failure of any caps could damage 
the meter.

Is it safe to just bring it up slowly with a variac or is it advisable to 
recap the power supply from the get-go? Thanks---
